Vienna Wandering

It has been a while. Let's just say it like that. Life and especially work have crept up on me and I hardly had time to travel let alone write about it. This then is my attempt of getting back into a groove.

The girls weekend in Vienna was back in May so consider this a bit of a throwback. The city of course is a timeless beauty and thus it really doesn't matter how much time has passed. Since leaving university life has been a whirlwind but it also means that instead of living 2 minutes away from each other my best friends are now scattered across Europe. Getting together requires a logistical stroke of genius and I am proud to say we have managed just that.

After work one fine Friday evening three successful business women jumped on planes carrying them to Vienna while the fourth scrambled to get her apartment ready for the invasion. Reunions were had and hugs shared and conversations lasted deep into the night.

Following a hearty breakfast the next morning we set out to explore starting with one of Austria's most beloved exports. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself, or rather his stonly likeness watches over the Austrian National Library.

Moving on we noticed a slight twist to the conventionally heterosexual traffic light couples all around the city. Yes, more than one of us braved running traffic to get a good shot of this wonderful support for equality

But I digress. We kept on stumbeling through the streets which are an architecture nerd's dreams come true. Magnificent building next to breathtaking building for miles and miles.

The Wiener Hofburg of course is one of the highlights of every Vienna city tour. Just as beautiful if not more so than its surroundings it invites you to dwell in times long past.

Moving on we made our way to the Sisi Memorial in honour of the Empress Elisabeth who is more commonly known as Sisi. When I was young it wasn't really christmas time until the movie triology came on TV. Every year I'd sit on our couch and watch her fall in love and deal with the struggles and strifes of royal life. Unfortunately, they don't show the movies on TV anymore. But that's what DVDs are for.

We eventually emerged in the rose garden which is a shutterbug's heaven. We spent quite a long time there getting up and personal with the most beautiful and colourful blossoms.

My favourite part though were the Natural History Museum and the Art History Museum. They are mirror images of each other representing the symbiosis of science and art which are both fundamental to life.

After all that walking we were famished. We took seats at Vienna's famous restaurant Neni. It's located in the heart of the Naschmarkt and offers a stellar selection of mediterean and arabic goodds. Find them here.

Over all the catching up and laughing heartily and enjoying being together again we forgot to take pictures of the meal itself. So have a picture of the most wonderful people cracking up instead.

The night ended with fantastic Sushi and lots of wine (and one of the few pictures of mayself). We stayed up well into the night simply unable to stop talking. And there was so much still to come to our adventure. So stay posted.
