Channel-ing Vacation Mode

Now that the adult working life as me well and truly in its grasp, I relish the opportunity to break away for a little while and get outside the office for days on end. There's only so much computer screen time you can take no matter how much you like your job. So, in May it was finally time for vacation. My mom had planned the entire thing and whisked me away to the two largest of the Channel Islands: Jersey & Guernsey. While perhaps a bit of an unconventional choice it turned out to be the perfect destination for two people who just wanted to be outside and explore the islands' unique natural beauty as much as possible.

So, for the next few posts I'll relieve this wonderful time which is best captured in this money shot.

We flew into Jersey via London and were welcomed by dreary rainy weather which thankfully cleared up pretty quickly. Catching the bus to St Aubin we made our way to the Panorama Guest House where we were greeted by the most lovely lady who owns the place. It is a dream come true directly in front of the harbour with this gem of a view from our room.

If the rooms weren't a love note to everything typically British and homey (they are) then it would be worth staying for the breakfast alone. They have a special almost everyday and everything I tried was without exemption delicious. You can feel the love and care that every single member of the staff pours into this hotel.

When the sun did come out we hardly wanted to leave our room because we were so hung up on the view and being finally here after having looked forward to this trip for a while.

But leave our room we did. Once the sea receded a bit we walked across St Aubin's Bay to St Helier enjoying the wonderful scenery. Jersey's tourist site has amazing maps and everything you could need to plan your stay there. The walk below shows our very first little hike (although we did make it backwards, unknowingly starting a theme for our time there).

Having one of the world's most notable tide cycles, Jersey can look vastly different depending on what time of day you happen to be outside. And nowhere did this become more obvious than in St Aubin's Bay which is filled to the brim with water during high tide and almost entirely dry during low tide.

We took advantage of being able to walk in the sand and breathing in the fresh air while making our way towards Jersey's capital.

The sheer extend of space you have during low tide is tempting to make one venture out closer to the water line. But be careful, once the tide is turning it goes way faster than you would think and can be quite dangerous if you are caught too far away from the shore. One thing to always do if you plan to walk out into the beach is look up the tide schedule online and listen to the local authorities.

In St Helier we got ourselves week bus passes as this is the best way to get around Jersey. The network is well established and gets you everywhere you could want to go. It's a great alternative if like us you aren't too comfortable driving on the wrong side of the road and would much rather enjoy the landscapes passing by anyway.

Upon returning to St Aubin and enjoying a great pub dinner we settled in for the night. Which really just means we sat by the open window and gazed at the moon. But really how could we help ourselves?
