Stockholm by Water

Our second day in Stockholm was quite literally 'Sunday'. As the sunrays reflected and glistened in the water we readily decided there was nothing for it but taking a little boat cruise around the town. Starting opposite the royal palace we hopped on one of the many harbour ships and off we went.

There is nothing quite like experiencing a city you technically already know from a new angle. And having picked the perfect day we got to see Stockholm in its most photogenic glory.

We headed along Strandvägen, the most picturesque avenue where magnificent buildings are flanked by even more magnificent buildings.

Taking a turn to the right we went past Nordiska Museet which for some reason always reminds me of the castle from Beauty and the Beast. I can't explain why for the life of me but standing in front of it I could swear I have been transported into the life action version of the story.

After that we passed Gröna Lund which I to my own shame have still not visited. It looks like great fun and one day I'll definitely manage to find the time. But on this weekend it wasn't to be.

We then took another right turn and with Södermalm on our lefthand side slowly made our way out of the city centre.

I really don't have enough words how calm and beautiful this journey was. Just a few minutes on you have the feeling you completely left the city behind (you haven't) with just the occasional brightly coloured wooden hut left.

We took a turn around Stora Essingen before making our way back. All the while we were thanking our lucky stars that the weather held up.

Finally we had Gamla Stan back on our left marking the oncoming end of our cruise.

And before we knew it we were back at the royal palace where we started from.

Happy and still much in awe of the beauty we were standing right in the centre of we headed into Gamla Stan for some ice cream (they have a Ben & Jerry's corner shop I would shack up in if I could). Soaking up the last bit of sunlight we went on for some beers in a local bar followed by much needed food in the form of Vapianos before calling it a night and returning home with the biggest grins on our faces.
